Zipline Las Vegas at night: the half hour that is worth booking

The line runs in daylight and it runs late, and the two are not the same purchase. In full sun the promenade below you is a shopping street. After dark it is lit from every side. The window worth booking is the half hour after sunset, when both the neon and the sky still have something in them.

The LINQ Promenade lit up at dusk with the High Roller behind

Quick answer

The short answer. Book the slot that starts about twenty minutes after sunset. The promenade lighting is on, the sky is still blue rather than black, and a photograph holds both. It is also the busiest slot of the evening, which is the whole reason to book it rather than turn up.

Why dusk and not midnight

The photograph decides it

Half an hour a day, and it moves with the season.

At two in the morning the promenade is lit and the sky is black. Every photograph from the launch deck at that hour is a bright strip of signs with nothing above it, and the camera on the tower is fighting noise the whole way.

At two in the afternoon the promenade is a pedestrian street in flat desert sun. The lighting that makes it worth flying over is switched off, and the deck is the hottest place on the Strip.

Twenty minutes after sunset both problems disappear at once. The signs are on, the sky still carries colour, and the difference in brightness between the two is small enough that a single exposure holds them. It lasts about half an hour and then it is gone.

This is not a Las Vegas insight, it is how dusk works everywhere. It matters more here because the thing you are flying over is made of light.

Planning around it

Five practical consequences

  • Look up sunset for your dates

It moves by more than two hours across the year here. In June it is close to eight; in December it is before half past four.

  • Book the slot, do not queue for it

Everyone else has worked this out too. The dusk slot is the first to go on a Friday.

  • In summer, dusk is also the first bearable hour

Two reasons to take the same slot, and the reason it is impossible to walk up to in July.

  • In winter, dusk is early and cold

Half past four with a jacket beats nine at night with a colder one.

  • The wheel afterwards, not before

The High Roller at the end of the promenade is the natural second half of the evening, and the view from it is better once the sky is fully dark. Buy it at its own counter.

Common questions

Day or night, answered

Is the Las Vegas zipline better at night?

Better than midday, yes. The best slot is about twenty minutes after sunset, when the promenade lighting is on and the sky still has colour in it.

What time does the Fly LINQ zipline run until?

Late into the night in season. The published hours change through the year, so check the day you are booking.

When is the queue shortest?

Weekday afternoons in spring and autumn. In summer the afternoon is unbearable on the deck and the queue moves to the evening with everyone else.

Can you see the Strip from the zipline?

You see The LINQ Promenade beneath you and the High Roller in front of you. The Strip itself is visible from the launch tower on the way up rather than during the flight.
